The countryside bike tour is the perfect break away from Amsterdam! Ride your bike out of the hustle and bustle of the city through the farmlands of Holland. Cycle over dams and dykes and bike through picturesque villages and scenic landscapes. Enjoy a refreshment break halfway through the tour and get a taste of the world’s best apple pie before. Discover Amsterdam’s oldest chalk windmill and spot the big five of Holland on this Dutch safari. This is a fun and active bike tour on which you will learn about watermanagement, the Dutch farming industry and windmills. Hop on for a relaxing tour and a perfect morning out in the fields and we bike the extra mile for you!
This tour starts daily at 09.30 am at one of our offices in central Amsterdam. After a quick 2 minute ride we hop on a ferry and cross the water of the IJ-lake. From the north banks of the city it’s a short ride into the fields and farmlands of the Waterland region. This area lays below sea level. Learn about watermanagement and the infrastructure of dams and dikes. Your guide will tell you how the Dutch manage to live below sea level and keep their feet dry.
The scenic bike lanes of this cycle tour of Holland will take us further into the countryside, headed to the picturesque villages of Nieuwendam and Durgerdam. Take your time to get your pictures and learn about the history of these fishermen villages at the shore of the Southern Sea. Join a refreshment break at the cute restaurant of the small farmer’s village ‘Holysloot’ halfway through the bike ride. The apple pie they make here is world famous in the region and the perfect fuel to keep us going. We have had people that would only do the countryside tour for a slice of this pie. 🙂
After the break, the tour is headed to Ransdorp with it’s remarkable church tower. This former capital of the Waterland region is a true landmark in the area and one of the most picturesque villages in the country. Learn about it’s fascinating history and take your pictures with the iconic tower.
See an 18th century windmill and learn about the windmill industry that made Holland a strong economic power.
On this 4 hour gentle cycle trip we cover about 30 kilometres (18.5 miles) and since our country is as flat as a pancake, most people would consider this a leisurely bike ride. Please note though that this countryside bike tour still requiers a basic fitness level and equal cycling skills. 30 km is a fair distance. Please be aware of this.
